it's cool that everyone forgot that the reason wilw drama blew up so fast is because they tempbanned auntifa without explanation, and that this understandably freaked a lot of trans people out on here because this is exactly how bad shit went down on other social media sites
something that techlibs will never understand. you need guiding _principles_ more than rules, because rules will be gamed by the worst people until your community rots
"we are enforcing the code of conduct evenly" ok, what are you doing when a public figure with a history of transphobia and a large built in audience signs up? they haven't broken any rules yet. what about the users who came here to get away from that? anything in the code of conduct about that?
@thatcosmonaut but they did explain? they mentioned her and shot her a message about why
@bootsy after several hours of silence, during which everything got messy as hell
my point is that blanketly condemning behaviors without analyzing the power relations that led to those behaviors is extremely unhelpful and will only lead to the fediverse replicating the exact bullshit that made everyone leave twitter
@thatcosmonaut *drums long nails on keyboard base* Oh Yah! That's why I followed the vibrating skull!
@thatcosmonaut This is true. People want rules to be logical, flawless, foolproof, applied 'equally' and 'fairly'. But there has to be room for fairness and commonsense, because the world isn't always equal and fair in the first place. Rules need a little flexibility built in. Even the law can be lenient when circumstances call for it.
That's why I'm happy I ended up on octodon by chance: the rules here feel more like guiding principles.
@thatcosmonaut this is it, comrade
