Cowboy Bebop was good! The best episodes were side stories and the finale was pretty meh but the show has some great aesthetics and the dub was v nice. I think it's aged pretty well.

@Aleums have you seen Samurai Champloo. Same director, similar vibe

@elchapo we started watching it but lost some interest after the fourth episode or so - there was a lot of gratuitous sexism that was kind of a downer. The pilot was EXTREMELY tight though, and I think we'll come back to the rest of the series at some point. I liked the music better, too.

@Aleums ah yeah I can see that. It plays with a lot of old timey Japanese tropes which run very sexist. It also kind of subverts them at times too, later on? Kind of mixed bag on that front I guess.

@Aleums bebop was a masterpiece tbh

it literally transcends genres and, at the time, was mindblowingly groundbreaking in a variety of ways (which is why they weren't allowed to air the whole thing)

@killeveryhetero ooh, I wasn't aware of that. I should do some research on it

@Aleums when it originally aired in Japan, they would only air 12 episodes (and highly censored them)

the team hated this but went along with it, placing a message in the typical bebop ending credits font at the end of the last episode which iirc read "ONE DAY, YOU WILL SEE THE FULL WORK"

sure enough,

@Aleums in NA, adult swim also censored the show pretty hard, and several episodes didn't air until years late due to similarities to 9/11 and other various catastrophic events at the time of airing

@Aleums ah, found it. the actual quote was "THIS IS NOT THE END. YOU WILL SEE THE REAL WORK SOMEDAY."

this was placed at the end of an extra montage clipshow they were allowed to air as a pseudo-ending to the show after the heavily redacted 12-episode run concluded.

@killeveryhetero @Aleums the clip show is absolutely worth it just for the soundtrack alone

@killeveryhetero @Aleums it didn't fully air? One more thing Firefly ripped off from it I guess

@Aleums Oh I didn't realize you were actually watching it for the first time.

Just an absolutely fantastic show. Not my all time favorite but god damn I loved it.
